Riveiro Remains Tight-Lipped on Saleng’s Future as Pirates Focus on Nedbank Cup

Orlando Pirates head coach, José Riveiro, has remained tight-lipped about the future of starlet Monnapule Saleng, whose absence from the squad since December has raised questions among fans.

Saleng, 26, was last seen in action during a CAF Champions League group stage match against Al Ahly on December 7. Since then, the forward has not featured in any matchday squad, leaving many wondering about his status at the club.

When asked about Saleng’s situation, Riveiro offered little insight, reiterating that player matters are private. “I don’t speak about my players; it’s something that belongs to a private space. When the club is ready to communicate information about injuries or player statuses, they will do so. It’s not my job to discuss that,” the Spanish tactician stated.

Riveiro went on to acknowledge that while supporters may want to know more about Saleng, as well as players like Olisa Nda and Goodman Mosele, who are also recovering from injuries, the coach emphasized, “It’s not going to happen.”

With attention now turning to the team’s next challenge, Riveiro is focused on defending their Nedbank Cup title. The Buccaneers will face Motsepe Championship side Baroka at Esigodini this Saturday. Under Riveiro’s guidance, Pirates have been unbeaten in the competition, winning back-to-back titles. The coach has also made history as the first Pirates manager to secure consecutive Nedbank Cup victories.

“We approach every game as an opportunity to win, to showcase the talent of our players, and to ensure we meet the standards required by this project,” Riveiro said. “This is our chance to defend the Nedbank Cup title, and we’re excited to continue our winning streak.”

However, the Spaniard is fully aware of the challenge ahead, cautioning that Baroka, despite their status as an underdog, pose a serious threat. “Baroka is a quality team with strong attacking players, and if we’re not at our best, they could make it a difficult day for us.”

As Pirates prepare for this vital clash, all eyes will be on Riveiro’s tactical approach and whether his side can maintain their impressive form in the competition.
