Orlando Pirates staged a thrilling comeback to claim victory over Chippa United in their Betway Premiership opener, thanks to a late goal from Monnapule Saleng.

Andile Jali, returning to haunt his former team, put Chippa ahead with a stunning long-range effort midway through the first half. However, Tshegofatso Mabasa equalized just before halftime from the penalty spot.
The match kicked off with the hosts showing great energy, but it wasn’t until the 15th minute that they created a clear chance, with Olisa Ndah heading wide from a corner. The breakthrough came in the 22nd minute when Jali capitalized on a loose ball, firing a powerful half-volley past goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
The Buccaneers pushed hard for an equalizer, with Saleng forcing a save from Stanley Nwabali in the 35th minute after another defensive lapse. Chaine was tested again shortly after, blocking a volley from Bienvenu Eva Nga in the 37th minute.

Just before the break, Pirates were awarded a penalty when Saleng was fouled in the box. Mabasa, last season’s Golden Boot winner, stepped up and coolly converted, ensuring he and the team were on the scoresheet for the new campaign.
The second half featured chances for both teams. Relebohile Mofokeng had a shot saved by Nwabali in the 51st minute, while Chaine made a brilliant stop to deny Thabo Makhele’s header in the 54th.
In the 78th minute, Saleng nearly gave Pirates the lead, striking the right post from inside the area. However, he redeemed himself in stoppage time, heading home to secure a dramatic comeback victory for Jose Riveiro’s side.
