Benni McCarthy a Top Candidate for AmaZulu Head Coach Position

AmaZulu is believed to have set its sights on Benni McCarthy as a potential replacement following the recent sacking of coach Pablo Franco Martin, according to SABC Sport. McCarthy, the former Bafana Bafana striker, has become available after his tenure as forwards coach at Manchester United, where he worked under Erik ten Hag for the past two seasons.

The decision to dismiss Martin came after three consecutive defeats in the Betway Premiership, leaving president Sandile Zungu determined to secure a top-four finish this season.

During his previous stint with AmaZulu in the 2020/21 season, McCarthy successfully led the team to a runner-up finish behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns, earning a place in the CAF Champions League group stages before departing in March 2022.

Sources indicate that AmaZulu is keen to welcome McCarthy back, expressing confidence that any past issues can be resolved. However, the club is also exploring other candidates for the vacant coaching position.

Among the alternatives are Morena Ramoreboli, who has led Botswana Premier League side Jwaneng Galaxy to two consecutive league titles; Bradley Carnell, currently unattached after leaving St. Louis City in MLS; and experienced coaches Stuart Baxter and Muhsin Ertugral, both of whom are available and have impressive resumes in South African football.

Baxter has managed notable teams such as Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana, while Ertugral has held coaching positions at clubs including Orlando Pirates, Ajax Cape Town, and Maritzburg United. Both candidates bring a wealth of experience from their time in European football and could meet AmaZulu’s criteria for a high-profile coach.

As the club navigates its options, all eyes will be on the decision-making process that could lead to McCarthy’s exciting return or the appointment of another seasoned mentor.
