BOWING OUT: ‘Wydad is a big club they deserve to win and maybe they deserve a better coach than me’ – Rulani Mokwena

Despite confirming that he will leave Wydad Casablanca at the end of the season, coach Rulani Mokwena stated that it is now up to the club’s president to decide whether to release him early from his duties following a 1-1 draw against Safi on Wednesday.

Mokwena joined Wydad at the beginning of the campaign to revitalise the club and secure a return to the Caf Champions League after finishing sixth in the Botola Pro 1 last season.

However, it appears the 38-year-old tactician has failed to meet expectations, as he has not won a single domestic trophy in Morocco.

With three games remaining, Wydad are in third place in the league standings, six points behind AS FAR Rabat. This puts their chances of qualifying for continental football in jeopardy.

The draw against Safi marked Mokwena’s sixth consecutive stalemate, and he has since admitted that he will leave the club at the season’s end. Wydad will remain the only team he has coached in the Botola Pro league.

“It’s up to the president (to decide whether I leave early). I’ve already said earlier that (I’m leaving) at the end (of the season), I will leave, that’s the situation,” Mokwena said to the media in Morocco.

“I love Wydad, I will only coach Wydad in Morocco, and so if I leave, I leave as a Wydad (faithful) because when you say Dima Wydad, you say Dima Wydad forever.

“And I want to thank the president, he’s been amazing, I think Wydad has the best president in Morocco or maybe in Africa.

The players have given me everything of the best, and the staff, they’ve been good. But Wydad is a big club, they deserve to win, and maybe they deserve a better coach than me.
