Former Orlando Pirates Captain Happy Jele has opened up about the difficult decisions that come with leaving a club after a long tenure, drawing parallels to Itumeleng Khune’s recent transition. Jele served the Pirates for 16 years before facing a similar crossroads when the club chose not to renew his contract.

Khune, after a remarkable 25-year career at Kaizer Chiefs, was not offered a contract extension for the 2023/24 season. Instead, he has the option to move into a marketing role within the club. At 37, Khune is eager to continue playing until the age of 40 but faces the reality that his future may lie outside the playing squad.
Chiefs made it clear that he must choose between a non-playing position or risk losing club benefits by seeking opportunities elsewhere.
Reflecting on his own experience, Jele shared his thoughts during an appearance on the Trap and Pass podcast.
I realized I was playing a big role at Orlando Pirates because I hurt a lot of people. My exit hurt a lot of people, but I also wanted to continue playing,” he said.
After a six-month break, Jele signed with Royal AM in January 2023, though his contract was not renewed at the end of that season. Despite this, he remains grateful for his time at Pirates, noting, “They taught me everything from day one, and I’m thankful for that.”
In the meantime, Khune has been announced as a new TV analyst for SABC Sport, although his exact role at Chiefs is still to be confirmed. As both players navigate these pivotal moments in their careers, their experiences shed light on the emotional and professional complexities athletes face when moving on from beloved clubs.
