The Proteas celebrated a resounding 139-run victory over Ireland in the first ODI held in Abu Dhabi, thanks to standout performances from Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs. After winning the toss, captain Temba Bavuma chose to bat first, but the Proteas faced early challenges, finding themselves at 39-3 by the end of the ninth over.

However, Rickelton and Stubbs turned the tide with a crucial 152-run partnership for the fourth wicket, both achieving their maiden ODI half-centuries. Left-handed Rickelton was the standout, scoring 91 off 102 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Stubbs contributed a solid 79 from 86 deliveries. Despite their efforts, the Proteas faced a tricky situation at 198-5 with 15 overs remaining when both players fell in quick succession.
Key contributions from tail-enders Bjorn Fortuin (28), Lungi Ngidi (20 not out), and Lizaad Williams (13) helped the team reach a total of 271-9 in their allotted 50 overs.
With the ball, Williams excelled, claiming impressive figures of 4-32 as Ireland struggled and were bowled out for a mere 132 runs. George Dockrell was the top scorer for Ireland with just 21 runs, while Andy Balbirnie and Curtis Campher both managed 20 but were unable to build upon their starts, falling to Williams.
The Proteas will aim to wrap up the three-match series with a win in the second ODI, scheduled for the same venue on Friday.
