The talented centre-back has signed for an undisclosed fee and will begin his journey in QPR’s development squad.
It has been a rapid rise for Smith as he only signed his first professional contract with Stellies in October 2024.
He helped South Africa clinch their first-ever CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations title earlier in 2025 and was named Player of the Tournament for his standout performances. He only signed his first pro contract with Stellies in October 2024, and now he’s off to chase his dream abroad.
The young defender is the first player to progress through Stellenbosch’s entire youth system, from U14 to reserves, before securing an international move.

Speaking to QPR’s media team, Smith said: “I’m really proud and grateful for the opportunity QPR have given me. They’re known for developing young players, and the playing style suits me well. I’m ready to give my all for the club.”
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie praised Smith’s journey, syaing that they have watched him grow from a young boy in Jamestown into a player ready for the world stage.
“His move is a reward for years of dedication. He’s proof that the pathways we’re building at the club are working.”
QPR CEO Christian Nourry added: “We beat serious competition to sign Tylon. His raw talent gives him every chance to succeed as a top defender, and we’re confident we can help him reach his full potential.”
Smith’s journey is a proud moment for Stellies and a huge inspiration for aspiring young footballers across South Africa.
