Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu has officially joined AmaZulu FC, unveiling his decision to sign with the Durban-based side on Tuesday. Alongside defender Sandile Mthethwa, the experienced Zungu becomes a marquee addition to the Usuthu squad.

The 32-year-old, who left Sundowns at the end of last season, had been a free agent for months. Speculation swirled around a potential move to Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club, but no deal materialized despite Zungu training under Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena. Instead, AmaZulu swooped in, and Zungu revealed the key factors behind his decision to join the KZN outfit.
My personal goal is to help the team climb as high as possible on the log table, assist the younger players, and bring my experience to the squad,” Zungu said in a club statement.
“Everywhere I’ve played, I’ve managed to win trophies, and I want to bring that same winning mentality here. I know what it takes to win, and that’s my aim.”
Zungu also expressed excitement about working under the coaching duo of Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi, highlighting their modern approach to the game as a major draw.
“I’m thrilled to be coached by Arthur Zwane and Vusi Vilakazi. I’ve watched AmaZulu’s games, and the team plays the modern game,” he continued. “My understanding of the game will help the team, but I know I have to work hard to earn my place.”
AmaZulu will hope Zungu’s arrival can inspire a turnaround in their current campaign. With his proven experience, including winning stints at Sundowns and stints abroad, Zungu brings both leadership and quality to the Usuthu midfield.
