Bongi Mbonami’s Sharks Future Under the Spotlight

Bongi Mbonambi has become one of the biggest talking points in South African rugby, with fresh reports raising questions about his future at the Hollywoodbets Sharks.

The experienced Springbok hooker, who helped South Africa win the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and 2023, is reportedly awaiting the outcome of a disciplinary hearing following an alleged breach of team rules during a pre-season camp. The matter has not yet been finalised, and the Sharks have not publicly confirmed the outcome.

At 35, Mbonambi has built an impressive career through hard work, leadership and experience at the highest level. Born in Bethlehem in the Free State, he came through the Blue Bulls system before making his mark with the Stormers. He joined the Sharks in 2021 and became an important figure in their forward pack. His strength at the set-piece, physical approach and experience have made him a valuable player for both club and country.

However, injuries have kept Mbonambi away from regular action, and his absence from the opening rounds of the 2026/27 United Rugby Championship season has added to the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future. The timing is particularly important as the Springboks prepare for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus previously indicated that Mbonambi could still be considered for national selection, but stressed the need for him to return to playing regularly and receive medical clearance. With Malcolm Marx competing for the hooker position, Mbonambi will need match fitness and strong performances to strengthen his chances of returning to the national team.

For Sharks supporters, the situation raises an important question: can one of the team’s most experienced players get back on the field and play a key role in the club’s ambitions? His experience and leadership would be valuable, but the outcome of the disciplinary process could have a significant impact on what happens next.

For now, Mbonambi’s immediate future remains uncertain. Until the Sharks provide further clarity and the disciplinary process reaches a conclusion, supporters will have to wait to see whether the double World Cup winner can put this difficult period behind him and return to action.
