Wallabies Survive Springboks Fightback in Perth Thriller

The Springboks came agonisingly close to completing a remarkable comeback, but Australia held on for a 42–38 victory at Optus Stadium in Perth.

The Wallabies raced into a commanding lead, going into half-time 24–17 ahead before extending their advantage to 42–17 with 15 minutes remaining. South Africa then launched a stunning late fightback.

Johan Grobbelaar, Edwill van der Merwe, Morne van den Berg and Ox Nche all crossed the line for the Boks, while a penalty try also added to their late surge.

Australia’s victory became even more dramatic as they were reduced to 11 players during the final stages after four players received yellow cards. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Wallabies managed to protect their narrow lead and secure the win.

For Australia, Len Ikitau was one of the standout performers, scoring two tries, while Max Jorgensen and Ben Donaldson also got on the scoresheet. Ryan Lonergan contributed 17 points with the boot.

The defeat was only South Africa’s second loss of the year, while Australia extended their unbeaten run under coach Les Kiss. The Springboks had made 13 changes to their starting team after their 3–1 series victory over New Zealand.

Despite the result, the Boks showed their never-say-die attitude by fighting back from 25 points down and pushing Australia right to the final whistle.

It was a thriller in Perth and one the Wallabies won’t forget anytime soon.
