Milford FC are quickly making their presence felt in the Betway Premiership. The newly promoted side delivered one of their biggest statements yet on Sunday, thrashing KwaZulu-Natal rivals Richards Bay 5–1 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium.
It was a dominant performance from Milford, who showed attacking intent from the opening stages and refused to let their opponents back into the contest.
S. Ndlabi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before M. Zikakayo struck twice, including a goal shortly after half-time. P. Jwara and J. Gxakoshe then added further goals as Milford completed a memorable five-goal performance. Richards Bay could only respond through T. Ndelu.
The result is particularly impressive considering Milford are newcomers to the top flight. They have adapted quickly to the demands of the Betway Premiership and are already showing that they are capable of competing with established teams.
In fact, Milford’s victory also made history. They became the first newly promoted side since Free State Stars in the 2007/08 season to win their first three home league matches.
Can Milford FC Go All the Way?
The big question now is whether Milford can maintain this momentum throughout the season.
Winning the league title may still be a major challenge. Mamelodi Sundowns have made another strong start and currently sit top of the table with 20 points from eight matches, while Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu are also among the early contenders. Milford, meanwhile, have 11 points from seven games.
However, a top-half finish is certainly within reach if Milford can maintain their current level of consistency.
Their biggest challenge will be avoiding the inconsistency that often affects newly promoted teams. The Richards Bay victory showed what Milford can do when everything clicks, but the real test will be whether they can produce similar performances against the league’s stronger sides and pick up points away from home.
If Milford continue collecting points at this rate, a top-eight finish could become a realistic target, while a push for the top four would be a remarkable achievement for a team playing its first season at this level.
For now, Milford should enjoy the moment. The 5–1 demolition of Richards Bay was more than just three points — it was a warning to the rest of the Betway Premiership that the newcomers are not here simply to survive.
