The Proteas are preparing for another major cricket challenge as Australia head to Mzansi to face the Proteas for a white ball and Test tour that promises plenty of intrigue.
The three match ODI series begin in Durban on 24 September, followed by matches in Johannesburg on 27 September and Potchefstroom on 30 September. The teams will then meet in a three-Test World Test Championship series beginning in Durban on 9 October.
South Africa have named a near full-strength ODI squad, with Temba Bavuma returning to captain the side. However, the Proteas have suffered a blow with fast bowler Ottneil Baartman ruled out of the ODI series with a hamstring injury, while Kagiso Rabada is also unavailable.
Australia arrive with their own questions. Marnus Labuschagne has been retained for the Test series despite his recent struggles, while selectors are considering how to structure their batting order, including the possibility of moving Steve Smith up the order.
There is also an added layer to the Test series. It will be Australia’s first Test tour of South Africa since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, with Pat Cummins acknowledging that the Australians could face a hostile reception.
Can the Proteas make home advantage count?
With the 2027 Cricket World Cup approaching, the ODI series gives both teams an important opportunity to test combinations and build momentum. Australia have already started their African tour with a 59-run win over Zimbabwe, with Matt Renshaw scoring his maiden ODI century.
For South Africa, the challenge will be to match Australia’s intensity while making the most of home conditions.
